Ballinasloe is a town in County Galway in the Republic of Ireland. The town is situated east of Galway city, in the western part of the midlands of Ireland. Ballinasloe lies at the most southerly point of the River Suck. It is primarily a market town; however, there is also a significant manufacturing sector. The town is now principally recognised for the Great October Fair. This fair has been conducted since the early 18th century.

Attractions Ballinasloe castle is a ruin standing on the site of an Irish earthwork castle predating the Anglo-Norman invasion. A 16th century towerhouse stands nearby. Location: In the centre of Ballinasloe.


Attractions THE BALLINASLOE FAIR is one of Europe's oldest Horse Fairs, held on the first week of October each year. It has its origins in "The Gathering of the Hostings" dating back to the High Kings of Tara. Its formal charter was granted by King George to the Second Earl of Clancarty in 1722. The Fair continued each year and gradually evolved into a great agricultural event with the horse at its centre. Location: In the centre of Ballinasloe.
