 The
Highlands of Scotland cover the northern two-thirds of
the country and here you will find some of its most spectacular
scenery with mountains, glens, lochs and rivers, moors and fertile
farmland. The area is sparsely populated with only 4% of the
population of Scotland living within it. There are some extemely
remote areas in the Highlands of Scotland, the huge peat bogs
of the north are among the most extensive and unspoilt wildernesses
in Europe. The west coast is the most scenic of the three coasts,
a jagged shoreline of sea-lochs, rocky headlands and white sandy
beaches against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, with the isles
of Skye, Mull and the Hebrides on the horizon. The ski-resort
of Aviemore makes a good base for exploring the spectacular Cairngorm
Mountains. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain at 4,406ft while
Loch Morar it is the deepest lake in Europe, reaching a depth
