Manchester could be called the world's
first industrialised city because of the subsequent central role
it played during the Industrial Revolution. It is the largest
city in the north of England, and is often described as the "Capital
of the North". Manchester has an excellent tram system,
with trams running every few minutes. The city offers shoppers
a wealth of major chains and small independent businesses with
King Street, New Cathedral Street, St Anns Square, Exchange
Street, a few of the many retail areas. There are permanent retail
markets in various parts of the city. Visit the Market Hall in
the Arndale centre. The city also offers a huge choice of gigs,
concerts, festivals and shows, whilst a tour of Manchesters
excellent museums and galleries is not to be missed. Manchester
has two football clubs, United & City, playing at Old Trafford
and The City of Manchester Stadium respectively. Also see Manchester & Manchester
