It is pleasantly situated on the south side of the river Stour, where the river widens into a broad estuary. Manningtree has many elegant buildings with Georgian facades. For two centuries, Manningtree was an important brewing centre and port. Manningtree High Street has an excellent selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. Mistley is still a small but thriving port. Nearby is Flatford Mill where Constable painted his most celebrated painting, the Hay Wain. Bridge Cottage serves as a free Constable museum and nearby Willy Lott’s Cottage, which featured in Constable’s works, looks very much as it appears in the paintings.
