The
Yorkshire Dales form a lovely upland
area of limestone hills and pastoral valleys at the heart of
the Pennines, with the Lake District to the west and the North
York Moors to the east. The Yorkshire Dales spread north
from the market and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, Ilkley and
Harrogate in North Yorkshire, with most of the larger southern
dales, Ribblesdale, Malhamdale and Airedale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale,
running roughly parallel from north to south. The more northerly
dales such as Wensleydale, Swaledale and Teesdale run generally
from west to east. There are also many other smaller or lesser
known dales such as Arkengarthdale, Barbondale, Bishopdale, Clapdale,
Coverdale, Dentdale and Deepdale, Garsdale, Kingsdale, Littondale,
Langstrothdale, Raydale, Waldendale and the Washburn Valley whose
tributary streams and rivers feed into the larger valleys. The
Yorkshire Dales' famous Three Peaks, Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough
and Whernside, attract hikers and pot-holers to the area, while
the Pennine Way cuts right through the heart of the Dales. Please
